Tanzania, with an unbroken record of political stability and abundant natural resources, is a key partner of the United States in East Africa. In recent years, Tanzania has recorded significant improvements in areas such as infant and child mortality; however, health and development challenges remain.HIV is the number one cause of mortality in Tanzania. The epidemic has stabilized since 1997, with the estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) remaining at 1.4 million from 2001 to 2009. The use of modern methods of contraception remains low, at just 27 percent, despite high contraceptive knowledge and substantial unmet need for spacing and limiting of pregnancies (DHS 2010). In 2009, the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator approved the Tanzania Partnership Framework, which focuses on expanding services, improving governance, securing commodities, enhancing prevention efforts, training health workers, and increasing transparency.
